Why does a sore back often cause leg pains? When your sciatic nerve at the base of your spine becomes inflamed, it sends pain impulses from the nerve roots to the buttocks and down the leg. What causes a nerve to become inflamed? Often an inflamed nerve root is the result of pressure from nearby disc. When a disc degenerates, it loses its elasticity and begins to bulge, causing it to flare out and touch the surrounding nerves. When is a spinal epidural recommended? Dr. Nguyen may recommend a spinal epidural to either relieve pain in your lower back and legs or as a diagnostic tool to locate the precise source of your pain. How long will I be in the hospital for the spinal epidural? The actual precedure itself only takes a few minutes but, with the preparation and recovery time that's required, you will probably be hospitalized for several hours. When can I resume my regular activities? You will have to take it easy for a few days after your spinal epidural. With Dr. Nguyen's permission, you will probably return to your normal activities within the week. The epidural is not a complete cure-all, however, so you could still have some lingering back problems. |
